Shoshazan Engyo-ji is a temple of Tendai (Taintai) Buddhism built around 1,000 years ago, located on top of Mt. Shosha. Mt. Shosha is the tallest mountain within Himeji City at 370 meters elevation and can be climbed up with a ropeway. Engyo-ji is a place with many national important cultural properties such as the maniden hall with a similar structure to that of Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera, and a mitsunodo hall, frequently used for movie shootings. There are also restaurants so that you can explore the great nature while taking relaxing breaks.

Maniden, Resembling Kyoto's Kiyomizu-Dera

At the center of Engyo-ji, you can see the maniden hall with its noble atmosphere. The maniden hall has the same structure as Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera and its greatness is nothing short of impressive. It can be entered so you should definitely go and enjoy the view from the top.

Mitsunodo Hall, Used in Hollywood Movies

Continuing from maniden hall, you will see a temple hall called the mitsunodo. It is divided into three parts of main hall, dining hall and training hall and its appearance, still remains the same as in the Muromachi period, is very impressive. It has been used as a shooting location for the Hollywood film Last Samurai as well as Japanese history dramas.
